PROJECT // Uist and Benbecula Youth Cafe
TOTAL PROJECT COST // £18,301.60
LEADER FUNDING PROVIDED // £8,301.60
Cothrom, (on behalf of the Substance Misuse Partnership Uist and Barra (SMPUB)) are acting as the lead partner on a joint project to re-launch and expand provision of Youth Cafe activities within the Uist and Benbecula area.
The project aims to run a Youth Café one evening per week during the school term, in Balivanich, Benbecula. In addition, a bi-monthly Youth Café session will be held in South Uist and one bi-monthly in North Uist. Additional diversionary activites will be offered during holiday times, including inter-island exchange activities with Youth Cafes in Barra, Harris and Lewis. A youth worker will be appointed to develop and deliver the Youth Café programme and holiday events, with guidance and support from partner agencies.
The principle of a Youth Café is that it is a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for young people. They can use this time and space to interact and socialise with their peers, relax, and take part in diversionary activities focusing on their wellbeing. It is their own choice to attend and to participate, and importantly young people are encouraged to be involved in the planning and running of the Youth Café. The Youth Café will allow them to interact with adults outwith the school and home setting, and familiarise them with partner agencies working in the community.
