ORGANISATION // The North Harris Trust
PROJECT // Huisinis Gateway
TOTAL PROJECT COST // £270,000
LEADER FUNDING PROVIDED // £125,000
The North Harris Trust (NHT) owns and operates the toilets in Huisinis. The building is over 15 years of age and now needs refurbishment. NHT has been working to design a replacement building and associated parking to address the issues raised by the community. The new facility, developed with the local crofters, will better-manage campers and day-visitors, as well as create a new community asset.
Huisinis Gateway will offer showers and changing facilities for the first time, allowing the Scaladale Centre and the local school to base outdoor activities at Huisinis. There will be a room with interpretation panels to educate visitors about the precious local landscape – which will double as a classroom for school groups out of season. Unlike anywhere else on Harris, campervans will have access to fully-serviced sites with a fantastic sea view.
Huisinis Gateway, with a serviced campervan site and toilet/changing facilities, will become a must-visit destination on the trip through the Western Isles. It will draw more visitors to the area, securing a larger slice of tourist spend for Harris and the businesses along the Huisinis road.
